Cumbria Trading Standards are warning householders in the south of the County about a London firm that cold-call offering a free damp survey. The operation is remarkably similar to a team that targeted the Kendal area last Autumn.

The firm offer a free damp test on the house, but then look to charge between £500 - £1500 for work which is done the same day as the survey. The workers arrive in a plain van, issue a contract which fails to mention cancellations rights, and take the money the same day.

The team that hit the County late last year left a trail of householders complaining about poor quality, overpriced work.

Trading Standards advice is never to have any type of building work, tarmaccing or damp-proof work done by a firm that cold-calls, either on the phone or the doorstep.

Phil Ashcroft, Head of Trading Standards, said:

“We advise consumers to avoid this type of operation. Already we have received a number of complaints from Barrow and Ulverston areas. If you need building work of any sort doing, always use a local firm that is recommended to you by family, friends or neighbours. I particularly ask family and friends of elderly residents to be on the lookout for building work cold-callers – often they target more vulnerable householders”.

Notes for Editors:

1. As with the last damp-proofing team to hit the County, the latest firm quotes an address in Docklands, East London.

2. Consumers have a 7-day cooling-off period if they agree to work being done as a result of a cold telephone/doorstep call.
