Businesses are warned to be on the lookout for the latest telephone trick. A business in West Cumbria received a call from a person seeking payment for charity school books. The caller said the books had been published as a result of the business agreeing to fund the project. The business had never agreed to make this payment. When they refused to pay the £199, the caller became abusive and aggressive.

Phil Ashcroft, Head of Cumbria Trading Standards, said
“Genuine charities selling goods do not resort to abuse to get money. This has all the hallmarks of a scam. Business and private individuals alike should satisfy themselves that the person is collecting money on behalf of a genuine charity – and only them part with money”.
