Yet another telephone con has come to light, warn Cumbria County Council’s Trading Standards Department.

In the latest scam, a 73 year old lady from Carlisle received an unsolicited telephone call offering to block unwanted calls to her, for payment of £9.50 a quarter. She was then asked for her bank details. Luckily the lady declined.

Jack Richardson, Cumbria County Council’s Community Safety Spokesman, said “This is the latest in a long line of telephone scams which either ask for money up front or for client bank account details. It is important that people never give their bank account details or send money following an unsolicited call”.

To avoid receiving these calls in the first place, people should contact the Telephone Preference Service on 0845 0700707. This service is free.
