NEW FIREWORK SEASON

FIREWORKS have gone on sale across the county in line with voluntary industry code of practice to limit firework sales to the three weeks leading up to November 5th and a few days afterwards.

North Yorkshire County Council trading standards service is warning retailers not to sell fireworks to any person under the age of 18. The Service will be undertaking spot checks across the county using young volunteers to make test purchases. Half of all injuries from fireworks involve children under 15 years of age. In addition, complaints are received on an annual basis of acts of hooliganism and other anti-social behaviour involving fireworks.

Trading standards officers will be visiting retailers to check stocks of fireworks. All fireworks must be safe and comply with BS7114, which should be clearly indicated on the packaging. The trading standard service is keen to hear from any retailer or consumer concerned about unusual fireworks from abroad on sale in local shops.

County councillor Carl Les, executive member with responsibility for the trading standards service said: “The number of firework injuries which occurred last year fell by 25% from the previous year. However, it still concerns me greatly that over 1,000 people were injured and many of these were before November 5th involving young people in the 13-17 year old age group who are not legally entitled to acquire fireworks.

Firework celebrations should be enjoyed by everybody and should not lead to young people being scarred for life. If any members of the public have concerns about the illegal sales of fireworks or if any retailers want further advice then I would urge them to contact the county council’s trading standards service”.

Traders and members of the public with concerns about the sale of fireworks to young people can contact the trading standards service on 01609 768606.
