NORTH YORKSHIRE County Council trading standards officers are issuing a warning to Harrogate residents about the activities of a tarmac gang operating in the Harrogate area.

Stuart Pudney, head of trading standards, said “This gang is mis-representing itself to businesses and consumers, claiming to be part of the Borough Council Highways Department. The gang has threatened violence to older people and their families, and have also threatened damage to property”.

Mr Pudney went on to say that trading standards officers and the North Yorkshire Police were now investigating the gang’s activities. He advised that consumers should never agree to pay for services such as driveway resurfacing and property repairs on the doorstep. Consumers should always obtain 3 written quotations from reputable tradesmen before agreeing to any work.

This gang is approaching elderly people, claiming to be from the Highways Department and providing quotes for resurfacing driveways. The quality of the work is sub-standard, at an inflated price and does not represent value for money.

Any consumer receiving approaches from the gang or who has any concerns over work being carried out should ring 01609 780780 and ask for Trading Standards.
