Castleford Tigers Support Proof of Age Partnership

Castleford Tigers Rugby League Team is backing the West Yorkshire Proof of Age Partnership as it is launched in the Wakefield District. The Partnership aims to prevent the illegal sale of age-restricted products such as alcohol and cigarettes to underage youngsters and is to be launched in the Wakefield district from 8th April 2003.

All secondary schools across the Wakefield district will be visited and cards will be issued to those pupils aged 16-18 with their photograph, date of birth and date when they turn 16 and 18. All retailers of age-restricted products will also be visited by Trading Standards Officers with the aim being to foster a “no card, no sale” culture.

Danny Orr, Captain of Castleford Tigers says, “I am pleased for Castleford Tigers to be backing the Proof of Age Partnership as it is launched in Wakefield. Youngsters need to realise that drinking and smoking from an early age can have detrimental effects on their health. The Proof of Age Partnership is great because it will encourage youngsters to pursue a healthier lifestyle”

Councillor Peter Box, Leader of Wakefield Council, added:

"We are very pleased to be working with other agencies, including Trading Standards and the Police, to introduce this important Proof of Age scheme in the District. It has been successful elsewhere and I am confident that it will be a big success in the District.”

Councillor Graham Clarke, Chairman of West Yorkshire Trading Standards Committee added:

“The support received from Castleford Tigers for the Proof of Age Partnership has been huge and I hope that the students who have come along today will be potential players for Castleford Tigers in the future!”

Cllr Paul Phelps, Cllr Jim Nicholson and Cllr Pat Garbutt are amongst councillors supporting the Proof of Age Partnership and are all championing the positive impact the Partnership will have on community safety in the Wakefield District.
