YOUNGSTERS “KICK” THE MESSAGE HOME ABOUT ILLEGAL SALES OF ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES

On Monday 3rd March, Castleford Rugby League Team hosted a “kick about” with pupils from Castleford High School and Knottingley High School to publicise the launch of the West Yorkshire Proof of Age Partnership.

The aim of the Partnership is to combat the sale of age-restricted products to underage youngsters. With Castleford Tigers starting the season off well, their Captain, Danny Orr recognises the importance of the message that the Partnership is trying to get across. He said, “I am pleased for Castleford Tigers to be backing the Proof of Age Partnership as it is launched in Wakefield. Youngsters need to realise that drinking and smoking from an early age can have detrimental effects on their health. The Proof of Age Partnership is great because it will encourage youngsters to pursue a healthier lifestyle”

The youngsters enjoyed meeting with team members and practicising with the team on the training ground. They all had a go at passing and kicking the ball and kicking for goal and were all in awe of the talent of the Castleford Tigers players.

Mr Hutchinson, Headteacher of Knottingley High said of the Partnership, “I am delighted that the West Yorkshire Proof of Age Partnership is being launched in the Wakefield district and am pleased to support local retailers in their efforts to reduce under-age sales of alcohol and tobacco. The pupils at the school think that the scheme is a good idea and are all looking forward to receiving their Proof of Age cards.”

Councillor Graham Clarke, Chairman of West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service added, “It is fantastic to have the support of Castleford Tigers behind the Proof of Age Partnership in Wakefield. The Partnership is promoting the NO CARD: NO SALE culture and I am convinced this will reduce underage drinking and underage sales throughout the Wakefield District and maybe we will see healthy youngsters who could be the Castleford Tigers of the future.”
