About Consumer Direct

Consumer Direct was launched in the Yorkshire and the Humber Region in August 2004. It is a telephone and e-mail based service funded by the Department of Trade and Industry. Serving a population of 5 million, it is a partnership between the DTI, West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service and the 10 other local authorities in the region. Other partners include Citizens Advice Bureaux, the Consumer Support Network and Community Legal Services.

Consumer Direct offers consumers advice over the phone and backup via email and on the web before and after buying goods or services. It also advises on how to find reputable traders, avoiding trading scams and reporting them when they do happen.

The aim is to help people to help themselves by informing consumers of the possible pitfalls they face in buying goods and services and equip them with the information they need to avoid them in the future. The hope is to empower people to solve their own problems and ensure that their own rights are recognised and protected.

Consumer Direct is a gateway to other consumer support services. If consumers need further help, such as an intervention on their behalf or specialist advice, they will be refered to an agency that is better placed to help. Consumer Direct will also create a database of case histories for use by Trading Standards and consumer organisations throughout the country. They will use this intelligence to target their resources and enforce the law more effectively
