Mobile phone Scams

The increase in the sale of mobile phones has resulted in an upsurge of mobile phone scams. Mobile phone users, such as yourself are now being bombarded with unsolicited text messages and calls.

One scheme offers a cash prize of £1000, which will probably never materialise but you may end up with a charge on your phone bill of £15.00. Calls are computer- generated to mobile phones, your phone may only ring once, but just enough to leave a missed call message on your phone. When you then ring the number back to see who was calling, you may be greeted with "congratulations, you have won……." You will then be asked to call a premium rate number to find out which prize you have won.

You may also receive text messages asking you to call or text to claim a prize. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you are in doubt delete the message immediately.

Numbers to look out for are anything beginning with 090, these numbers are likely to cost £1.50 per minute. Also watch out for five digit text numbers.
