TRANS-ATLANTIC PHONE MENACE GOES ON

CONSUMERS in North Yorkshire are being warned to be on their guard for the latest scam from across the Atlantic. Once again it appears that the county is being targeted by conmen. The trading standards service continues to receive details of consumers who have been contacted by a company based in Miami, Florida. They are told that they have won more than a million US dollars and that to claim their prize they should send a money order in the sum of 5,000 to clear American taxes.

Stuart Pudney, head of trading standards and regulatory services for North Yorkshire County Council, said: "If you've not entered into a prize draw it is not likely that you will have won a prize and I am asking consumers to be ever vigilant in not responding to these Trans-Atlantic conmen." He also asked people with elderly relatives to be aware of the problems. He fears that gullible people might be taken in by this new twist on an old scam.
