Northumberland pensioners are being given another opportunity to sleep safe & sound this winter by taking advantage of free safety checks on electric blankets owing to the success of similar events over the last two years. Those living in the North of the County are being urged to take advantage of this campaign in September.

Last year, 60% of all electric blankets tested failed the free safety check. The majority of faults were due to their age and having no overheat protection. Further failures were attributed to faulty plugs and / or faulty wiring.

Northumberland County Councilís Trading Standards Department, Fire & Rescue Service, Social Services, together with Age Concern and Northumberland Health Action Zone are all working in partnership to provide the checks.

The testing days are planned at:

Berwick Fire Station - Monday 16th & Tuesday 17th September.

Alnwick Fire Station - Wednesday 18th & Thursday 19th September.

Rothbury Fire Station - Friday 20th September.

In addition to having their blankets tested, pensioners will receive other useful information on safety matters.

Refreshments will be available free of charge courtesy of the North Eastern & Cumbrian Co-op.

Appointments can be made by telephoning 01670 534586 from Tuesday 27th August onwards and because places are limited, early booking is advisable.

Notes for Editors.

The age group at greatest risk is elderly people, aged 65 and over.
