West Yorkshire Trading Standards
Service today congratulated Roberttown Junior and Infants School of Liversedge
for coming top in the national “Playsafe” competition.
The competition, run alongside the
Young Consumers of the Year quiz, involved schools in the region designing a toy
(on paper) paying special attention to safety.
Roberttown School were winners of the regional competition, and their
entries were exhibited at the annual Trading Standards Institute Conference and
Exhibition in Birmingham last week, where they were judged, along with others
from throughout the country, by the British Toy and Hobby Association.
It
was a tough competition, with entries of a very high standard, but the
Roberttown entry from a group of nine pupils in year 5 – Jessica Barrett,
Hannah Tante, Sophie Purcell, Maria Nawaz, Lucy Kellett, Toni-Marie
Rotherham-Shelton, Rachael Hutchinson, Hannah Bellfield and Aimie Crodden - was
judged as the winner in the 9-11 age group, and also as the overall national
winner in all categories, meaning that the school now get £1000 of IT
equipment and book vouchers for £100. The
group of pupils also get £100 of book vouchers to share, and will enjoy a trip
to the International Toy Fair in the heart of London’s Docklands, later in the
year to be presented with their prize.
The
winning entry – the “Spacetacular Planet Hopscotch” a creation
inspired by a school trip to the Space Museum, was a fantastic design, aimed at
educating players about the planetary system whilst encouraging outdoor exercise
and play. The children had to
create their design with safety in mind, and the competition gave them an
excellent opportunity to learn more about the rules and regulations enforced by
Trading Standards, which govern the toys they play with on a daily basis.
Martin
Wood, Chief Trading Standards Officer, said “It is absolutely fantastic
that the West Yorkshire entry from Roberttown won not only the 9-11 years prize
category, but also the overall national prize from all the age groups. This
demonstrates the high level of creativity from the pupils at Roberttown, as they
were competing with entries from children up to the age of 17”
Councillor
Graham Clarke, Chairman of West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee added hid
congratulations, “Well done to the pupils from Roberttown School.
They have put a lot of effort into their entries and deserved the prizes.
The school will benefit enormously from the IT equipment and this should
serve as encouragement for schools to participate in next year’s
competition”
