YOUNG CONSUMER OF THE YEAR 2002 REGIONAL FINAL

After highly competitive District Heats, schools across West Yorkshire are preparing for the Regional Final of the Young Consumer of the Year Competition 2002.

The Regional Final will be held on Monday 25 March 2024 at Elland Road, home of Leeds United Football Club and will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor David Ellis Hudson.

The winning school at the Regional Final will be crowned West Yorkshire Young Consumers of the Year 2002 and will go on to represent the region in the National Finals at the Trading Standards Institute’s Annual Conference to be held in Birmingham on Wednesday 10 July 2002.

To get this far, the schools have already battled it out with other schools in their districts in a knock out style quiz, answering questions on consumer related issues including safety, the environment, money and finance.

The schools competing in the Regional Final will be:

            Salt Grammar, Bradford District

            The Ridings School, Calderdale District

Colne Valley High School, Kirklees District

Rodillian School, Leeds District

Ossett School, Wakefield District

Garforth Community College, Leeds District – best runner up

The pupils have already received prizes for themselves and their schools, but much more can be won at the Regional Final thanks to support from sponsors such as Arla Foods and CCL Computers.  For the first time a prize is on offer to the school judged to have shown the most effort and enthusiasm throughout the competition. This school will be presented with a multi-media computer with all associated features

West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service will continue working closely with schools throughout West Yorkshire to assist with the new National Curriculum subject Citizenship, being introduced in August 2002 as part of its drive to improve consumer education.

Councillor Graham Clarke, Chairman of the West Yorkshire Trading Standards Committee commented,

“The success of the District heats has shown again that this competition is a fun way of learning important skills. The schools involved have put a lot of time and effort into the competition and have enjoyed working closely with West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service.  I am looking forward to a closely fought battle at the Regional Final on Monday.”
