Householders are warned to be on their guard against security firms who telephone out of the blue and offer a free security check. If the householder agrees, a representative will call and give a hard and misleading sales pitch.

Phil Ashcroft, Head of Cumbria Trading Standards said “These businesses are from away. They often use dubious selling tactics. The salesperson may give the false impression that they are linked to or approved by the police. If you are concerned about your home security contact the Crime Prevention Officer at your local police station for free and impartial security advice. Do not buy from businesses that contact you uninvited”.
