Tarmacers from out-of-county are currently calling on householders in the West of Cumbria. To give themselves a veneer of legitimacy they hand out cards with ‘County Road Works’ written large. But don’t be fooled; they are nothing to do with Cumbria County Council – or any other local authority.

Their modus operandi is to call on elderly people and say that they have free tarmac and would lay out their drive for a modest £2 per square foot. This equates to £19 a square yard!

Phil Ashcroft, Head of Cumbria Trading Standards, said:

“Do not employ these people. Experience shows us that itinerant tarmacers do very poor quality work and grossly overcharge. And, when problems later arise, you can’t find them. This gang were operating in Cockermouth yesterday, but could be anywhere in Cumbria now”.
