DOORSTEP CONMAN WARNING

NORTH YORKSHIRE Trading Standards and police officers are warning residents to be on their guard after an 88 year old woman, from the Eastfield area of Scarborough, became a victim of a doorstep con late yesterday afternoon.

After answering the door and allowing a man, claiming to need to do work on the householder’s water supply, he tricked her into checking the downstairs taps while he went upstairs and stole £5,000.

Councillor Carl Les, the county council’s executive member for Trading Standards said: “This is an appalling crime and elderly residents are all too often the targets. We are working hard in North Yorkshire to reduce this type of crime and educate older adults on how to avoid becoming victims.

Trading Standards Officers advice is to only answer the door with a door chain or bar attached, never allow anyone into your home unless you are satisfied of their true identity and never ever keep large sums of money in the house.”

North Yorkshire County Council Trading Standards have worked hard to ensure that any utility providers in North Yorkshire follow a strict protocol when cold calling on householders. Utility workmen or meter readers will not be offended if you contact a friend or neighbour to be with you or you ring the utility company directly to check the identity before allowing them access to the home. If in any doubt as to their identity you should keep them out.

County Councillor Carl Les went on to say that “Trading Standards can provide ‘Check Them Out’ cards which contain a list of the main utility companies operating in North Yorkshire and so householders are able to check on the identity of anyone purporting to be from a utility company.”
