A FURNITURE SELLER who has been known to operate throughout North Yorkshire selling door- to-door or stopping people in the street is being investigated by the county council's trading standards service.

North Yorkshire County Council was called in following a complaint from a Scarborough resident concerning claims that furniture described as being leather appear to be false. Also, the furniture does not comply with important flammability regulations.

Trading Standards Officers have tracked down the seller and the furniture is currently being tested against claims.

Councillor Carl Les, the county council's executive member for trading standards said: “This is just another example to show that there are no bargains when buying from doorstep sellers. Handing over £400 to someone that you don’t know and will never find if things go wrong just doesn’t make good sense.

"Officers spend a lot of time investigating these types of incidents but rarely will they be able to recover monies paid. These problems are on the increase and householders must realise that the only real defence is simply to say no and shut the door”
