NORTH YORKSHIRE STILL TOPS FOR WEDDINGS

IT'S SPRING!

So, when a young man's fancy turns to………it's nice to know that official figures show that once again North Yorkshire really is the place to get married.

With four civil marriages per 1000 population, North Yorkshire ranks equal first with Cheshire of all the 34 English counties. The figures released by the Office of National Statistics also show a five per cent increase in civil weddings in North Yorkshire over the four years up to April 2002, when nationally the figures only rose by less than two per cent.

And it looks like 2003 could be even better, for the number of weddings has risen again at both the register offices and the many venues approved for weddings.

Councillor John Dennis, the county council's executive member for business and community services, said: ” These figures are no surprise as we have put a lot of effort into marketing North Yorkshire as a top wedding venue.

"We are well aware of the problems which have affected rural communities in recent years. So, by attracting couples to get married here, we can play out part in helping the county to recover."

More information on getting married and a full list of all the venues is available on the web site at www.northyorks.gov.uk or by calling 01423-506949
