Trading Standards Officers in West Yorkshire have today issued an alert to all local businesses to a possible scam involving unsolicited telephone calls from a company who purport to be creating a calendar or advertising brochure, the proceeds of which will go directly to a charity for children with cancer.

The nature of the telephone call is that the company targets a business and indicates that the artwork for their advertisement is now ready and ‘confirms’ the price, misleading recipient companies into believing that there has already been a pre-arranged contractual agreement in place for the advert in the calendar or brochure.

The Education and Promotions Team at West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service has recently received such a telephone call, but became suspicious during the conversation with the company. However, when interrogated for their address, the caller hung up.

Martin Wood, Chief Officer of West Yorkshire Joint Services said

“I am surprised that that this company tried to con West Yorkshire Trading Standards, especially when we are the organisation who are there to protect consumers and businesses from this type of deceptive practice”

Councillor Graham Clarke, Chairman of West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee said:

“ This company are targeting local businesses, but we are also aware that they have been in contact with local authority departments. We believe their claim that they are linked to charities is fictitious and anyone targeted shouldn’t feel guilty for saying no to paying their advertising fee. If you or your organisation receives such a call, and you suspect that no agreement has been made, then, quite simply, do not pay the bill! Any business wanting to make a donation to a charity should check with the Charities Commission to ensure it is registered as a genuine organisation. “

Should traders have any concerns about these matters then they should contact the Consumer Helpline on 0113 3 848 848. The lines are open between 8.30 – 6.30 Monday to Friday and 9.00 – 1.00 on Saturdays. The Charities Commission can be reached on 0870 333 0123.
